Saturday, December 24 at 5:00pm-“Christmas Eve with Our Hopedale Family.” We’ll gather together in community with friends and family to sing songs, to share stories, and to praise the great mysteries and miracles of life. May the magic of this special night renew our hopes for a more peaceful and compassionate world. This special service for all ages will be led by Student Minister Bruce Beisner.

Correction! December 18-“Winter Solstice.” December 18 – “Winter Solstice” –Winter Solstice is a time of renewal, peace and interconnectedness. Join us as we explore the meaning of our darkest day of the year with an interactive service that will include a fun activity for our bird friends. Dress prepared to spend a just few minutes outside our sanctuary. Service Leader: Cindie Ulreich.
December 11-“Making Peace with the Prince of Peace.” As we contemplate this upcoming celebration of Christmas, is it possible to move beyond the age-old arguments of who Jesus was (God or human or both)? What might happen if we focused more on what he did and what his story calls us to do? We’ll explore how the teachings and life of Jesus of Nazareth might inspire us to live our lives today with more compassion, empathy and peace. Service leaders will be Student Minister Bruce Beisner and Patty Klingenberg.
December 4-“People Working for Peace in the Middle East.” Guest speaker Randy Wilson will discuss her recent trip as part of a delegation with Interfaith Peace-Builders to meet with Israelis and Palestinians working for peace. She will tell the stories of people she met with and how they are bridging the divide and what we can do as Americans to support their efforts. Service Leader: Genevieve O’Malley Knight.
November 13 “Everybody’s Crazy But Me.” More than once on Star Trek the crew awoke to find themselves in some alternative universe or timeline. Gradually they discovered that things just weren’t right and they had to invent some way to get back to where they belonged. In our spiritual quest to accept other people, sometimes it feels like we are living in that “bizarro world” where everyone has a black goatee. How can we live out our values when it seems that everybody’s crazy but us? Service leaders: Student Minister Bruce Beisner and Sallie Killian.
Bryan Bowers, autoharp master, singer, songwriter and storyteller, will perform at the Hopedale UU Community on Sunday, November 13, 8pm. Tickets are $15.00 ($10.00 for seniors). Empty Bowls is scheduled for Saturday, November 5, 2011, 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at the Oxford United Methodist Church. Proceeds will be donated to the Oxford Community ChoicePantry to support its effort to provide food to local families in need. The cost is $10 adults; children 10 and under may choose and fill a bowl for free. To find out mor about empty bowls go to our social justice page.
October 30-“Reflections.” Thoreau’s thoughts on living deliberately and deeply provide the context for our sharing. What inspires me to aspire? Who is my model for living life fully? What sustains and renews me? We’ll honor the poems, memories, testimonials, and keepsakes revealing our stories and hard-earned wisdom. Service leaders: Cindie Ulreich and Sallie Killian.
October 23-”Goblins and Witches and Zombies, Oh My!” Second only to Christmas, Hallowe’en is the most popular of holidays among Americans. Trick or treating, haunted houses, and scary movies abound this time of year. We’ll explore the spiritual dimensions behind the ways we celebrate Hallowe’en and what they might say about how we understand death and the darker sides of life. Student Minister: Bruce Beisner.
